RACISM AND PROSPECTIVE WAYS TO KICK AGAINST IT

Racism according to Oxford Dictionary, is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others, or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

What is the most effective way to make a difference in the fight against racism?

It is easy to feel helpless and confused but it is also important to remember that we can be useful. George Floyd died mercilessly in the hands of that Minneapolis officer. He was helpless and brutally killed. He shouted repeatedly for “freedom“, he even called his “momma” who apparently had died some years back. We must recognize that this is an ongoing struggle, not a trending issue. We need to stand on our feet to fight against racism. But how can we?

Rome was not built in a day, So also is racism. It must be noted that racism did not just evolve, it has been in existence right from time. Most people actually believe that racism is only limited to skin color. No, it’s not! Racism starts with YOU as a person.

It begins the moment you underrate or ultimately hate yourself for who you are. Late Matin Luther King, who was an American Christian Minister and activist said and I quote,

” darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”.

Therefore, the moment you start loving and celebrating yourself for who you are, then you’re a step ahead in fighting against racism. None of us is responsible for the complexion of our skin. This fact does not determine who or what we are. Moreso, it’s not a crime to be born black! It’s high time we knew that we’re “Precious“. We cannot fight against racism until we see the importance of what we are made of.

Also, the best way to fight against racism is The act of “Excellence“.

It is the best deterrent to racism or sexism. It does not matter who you are or where you came from, the ability to triumph begins with YOU. It is high time we change that mentality of being a failure.

Failure does not actually mean you are a failure, it only gives another opportunity to try again and know better. Therefore, if you determine to stay down as what you think failure has caused, then you’re indirectly calling yourself an exact failure! It is not our differences that divide us, it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.

Finally, I will never forget the great quote of Ijeoma Oluo. She said and I concur,

” the beauty of anti- racism is that you don’t have to pretend to be free of racism to be an anti-racist, Anti-racism is the commitment to fight against racism wherever you find it, including yourself, and it is the only way to move forward”.

*To have peace, then you need to be free from those negative thoughts. Love yourself, be an optimist, and be committed to equality, with these, the whole wide world will be a better place to live*
